Tax questions from athletes and performers in New Zealand
Questions we get asked
Plain-English answers to the common ones. Every situation is different, so talk to us before you act on any of them.
Do I pay New Zealand tax on money I earn overseas?
If you're a New Zealand tax resident, your overseas income is taxable here. You may be able to claim a credit for tax already paid overseas, so the same income isn't taxed twice. If you've recently become a New Zealand tax resident, you may qualify for a four-year exemption on most foreign income.
I'm moving overseas for a contract. Am I still a New Zealand tax resident?
Possibly. You generally stop being a New Zealand tax resident only when you're away for more than 325 days in a 12-month period and you no longer have a permanent place of abode here. Family, a home and other ties all count, so it's worth checking before you go. Keeping a home here can keep you resident, however long you're away.
Is my prize money taxable?
For amateurs, prize money is generally not taxable. Professionals must include all payments and prizes in their return. Once you receive sponsorship, endorsement or advertising income, you're generally earning taxable income, even if you're still technically an amateur.
Are grants and royalties taxable?
Grants and royalties earned through your work are usually taxable. Some grants have their own timing rules, which can affect cashflow, so we check each one.
Do I need to register for GST?
If your income from your sport or performing reaches $60,000 or more in a 12-month period, or is likely to, you must register for GST. You can choose to register below that.
We're bringing overseas athletes or performers to New Zealand. What tax applies?
Usually 20%. If you pay an overseas athlete or performer for a New Zealand event, you'll normally hold back 20% and pay it to Inland Revenue. Some payments are exempt and a tax treaty can change the rate, so we check each one before you pay.
Do you give investment or insurance advice?
No. We look after the tax, structure and cashflow side. For investment, insurance or KiwiSaver advice, we introduce you to licensed advisers associated with Three Six Advisory and Calc, and keep everything joined up.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the package and what's involved. Your fee is agreed with you before we start, so there are no surprises.
